I tied the bottom string (longest dowel) in 5″ from the end also and made my cut line from that. I got TWO trees from one set of dowels.
No waste at all. One for me and one as a gift!

I used 8 branches… sorry no pictures. 5″ apart & 5″ for hanging twine. Tied with twine 1″ in from each end. Branches diameters were ½ to ¾ inches. Branch lengths in inches 5, 9, 13, 17, 21, 25, 29, & 33. Total from hanging to bottom 40″ with a desired bottom to end for decoration to shelf. (I used 8″.) NOTE: Branches were not straight, lengths measured straight end to end. Adjustments between made to prevent tree from looking lopsided.

Such a great idea.. .now my kids can have a Christmas tree in their room! I think we’ll use actual tree limbs (we live next to state land.. .so many branches, we will find the the right sizes)!! My kids say “thank you” and I love that we have a project that has tradition written all over it!

Is there a chance that you can measure the lengths that you used in each of the dowels you used. Like the length of the top dowel…all the way down to the last bottom one (perhaps that one, you did not cut at all). I am thinking that if I have the measurements for each dowel, I can perhaps Just cut the dowels that length and do the placement…It might save a bit of money for cost of the tree…and perhaps the scraps of dowel left will be a bit longer and can be used in another craft…thank you for the idea. amazing…would love to make one for a daughter’s house…

You’re Tree is really cute. I can just picture making one to hang at the bottom of our stairs as we then walk into the finished part of the basement. Great idea for hanging ‘themed’ ornaments.
